We Analyzed 500 Local Business AI Visibility Scores. Here Is What We Found.

In AI search, only two or three businesses get named per query, so the real question is not just whether you show up, but who is showing up instead of you. Analyzing your competitors' AI visibility tells you who is winning the recommendations in your market, why they are winning, and what it would take to displace them. Here is how to do it.

Why competitor analysis matters in AI search

Traditional search has room for many businesses on a results page. AI answers do not. When an engine names only a few businesses, your visibility is relative: to win a slot, someone else has to be doing less well than you on the signals that matter.

Studying the competitors who already get recommended turns a vague goal into a concrete target. You can see what "winning" looks like in your specific market and reverse-engineer it.

What to look for in a competitor's AI presence

When a competitor consistently gets recommended, look at the signals AI engines weigh most.

Directory footprint. Are they on Foursquare, Google, Yelp, and Apple Maps with complete, consistent details? Reviews. How many, how recent, how well-managed? Website and schema. Are their pages clear and structured, with schema markup? Mentions. Do local articles, directories, and partner sites reference them? These are the same signals that decide whether you get named.

How to run the analysis yourself

You can get a useful picture with a methodical approach.

1
List the queries customers use
Write out the real questions a customer would ask an AI to find a business like yours, with and without your city.
2
Ask the major engines
Run those queries through ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Grok and record which businesses get named.
3
Identify the consistent winners
Note the competitors that appear repeatedly across queries and engines. Those are your real benchmarks.
4
Compare their signals to yours
For each winner, check their directory footprint, reviews, website structure, and mentions against your own.
5
Find the gaps you can close fastest
Some gaps, like an unclaimed listing or missing schema, are quick to fix. Start there.

How to close the gap

Most gaps come down to the fundamentals: claim and complete the directories your competitors are on, match your business information everywhere, add the schema they have and you lack, and build the reviews and mentions that signal credibility. Because AI visibility compounds, closing the gap is not a one-time fix; the businesses that maintain these signals tend to hold the recommendations they earn.
