What Is AI Visibility?
AI visibility is how often your business appears as a recommendation when someone uses ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, or another AI search engine to find a local business like yours. It is a new category of online visibility that did not exist three years ago and is now one of the most important ways customers discover local businesses.
What is AI visibility?
When someone types "best dentist near me" into Google, you either appear in the local pack or you do not. When someone types the same question into ChatGPT, the same logic applies, ChatGPT either names your business in its response or it names someone else.
AI visibility is a measure of how often AI engines include your business in their answers. It is usually expressed as a percentage, if ChatGPT names your dental practice in 3 out of every 10 relevant queries, your ChatGPT mention rate is 30%.
Unlike Google rankings, where you can see exactly where you sit for specific keywords, AI visibility is probabilistic. AI engines generate different responses to the same question depending on who is asking, where they are located, and how the question is phrased. This is why measuring AI visibility requires running hundreds of different prompts, not just one.
Why it matters right now
Three years ago, AI visibility was not a business concept. Today it is one of the fastest-growing channels for local business discovery.
The 88% gap is the opportunity. Most of your competitors have never thought about their AI visibility. The businesses that act first in their local market get the early mover advantage, the same kind of advantage that early Google Maps adopters had in 2010.
How AI engines decide who to recommend
AI engines do not use the same ranking signals as Google. They do not count backlinks or measure keyword density. Instead, they cross-reference multiple data sources to build confidence in a business before including it in a recommendation.
When ChatGPT answers "best plumber near me in Indianapolis," it is doing something like this behind the scenes: it looks for your business in the data sources it trusts, checks that your name, address, and phone match across those sources, looks for structured information about what services you offer, and evaluates whether there is enough corroborating data to include you with confidence.
If any of those steps fail, your Foursquare listing is unclaimed, your address format is inconsistent, you have no schema markup on your site, the AI engine skips you and recommends the plumber down the street whose data is cleaner.
The signals that drive AI visibility
Four categories of signals determine whether AI engines recommend your business.
AI visibility vs traditional SEO
These are related but different disciplines. Traditional SEO improves your rankings in Google's 10 blue links. AI visibility improves how often you appear in AI-generated answers across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, and Grok.
You can rank number one on Google for "best dentist Indianapolis" and still be completely absent from ChatGPT's recommendation for the same query. They draw on different signals. AI engines weight citation consistency, schema, and GBP data more heavily than backlinks and keyword optimization.
The good news: many of the signals that improve AI visibility also improve Google local rankings. Citation building and GBP optimization help both. Schema markup helps both. Improving your AI visibility is not a separate project from improving your local SEO, it is an extension of it that covers the 37% of customers who now start their search with AI instead of Google.
How to improve your AI visibility
The priority order for improving AI visibility is consistent across business types. Start with the signals that have the most impact.
Step 1: Claim and optimize your Foursquare listing. This is the fastest path to improving your ChatGPT visibility. Foursquare provides roughly 70% of ChatGPT's local data. Most local businesses have never touched their Foursquare listing. An unclaimed or incomplete listing is the most common reason a business is invisible on ChatGPT.
Step 2: Fix NAP inconsistencies across directories. Run a citation audit and find everywhere your business is listed with incorrect or inconsistent information. Correct every discrepancy. Even small variations, "Suite 4" vs "Ste 4", can erode AI engine confidence in your data.
Step 3: Install schema markup on your website. JSON-LD schema is invisible to your website visitors and has no effect on your page speed. But it is critical for AI engines. At minimum, install LocalBusiness schema with your correct business type, address, phone, hours, and services.
Step 4: Complete and optimize your Google Business Profile. Every field matters. Services listed, Q&As written, attributes set, posts published. Gemini draws directly from your GBP, an incomplete profile means incomplete AI recommendations.
Step 5: Measure your progress weekly. AI visibility changes as engines update their data. Measuring your mention rate regularly lets you see what is working and catch any drops early.
How to measure your AI visibility
There is no single authoritative AI visibility number, it has to be measured by running real prompts against the engines and recording what they say. A complete measurement involves running at least 50 to 100 prompts per engine across the queries your customers actually use.
An AI Visibility Score typically ranges from 0 to 100. A score of 0 means you appeared in none of the tested prompts. A score of 100 would mean you appeared in every prompt, nearly impossible in competitive markets. Most local businesses starting from scratch score in the 10 to 30 range. A well-optimized business in a low-competition market can reach 70 to 80.
